USA’s New $250 Visa Integrity Fee: What It Means for Pakistani Applicants

If a trip to the United States is on your plans, there’s an important new cost to know about. The US has introduced a $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” — a mandatory charge on top of the existing visa application fee for almost every visitor. Here’s what it is, who pays it, and what it means for applicants from Pakistan.

What is the Visa Integrity Fee?

The fee was created by a US law (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) signed on 4 July 2025. It adds a $250 charge on top of the standard visa application (MRV) fee for most non-immigrant visas. In plain terms, getting a US visitor visa is becoming more expensive — the extra fee is separate from, and additional to, the fee you already pay to apply.

Effective total

For a B-1/B-2 visitor visa, that means an effective total of around $435 — the $185 application fee plus the $250 integrity fee. The integrity fee is collected at the point your visa is issued, not when you apply, so it’s paid in stages across the process.

Who has to pay it?

The fee applies to non-immigrant visa categories — which includes tourists and business visitors (B-1/B-2), students (F-1), exchange visitors (J-1) and temporary workers. Travellers from Visa Waiver Program countries and immigrant-visa applicants are exempt. For Pakistani passport holders, who need a full visitor visa, the fee does apply.

Not collected just yet. The law is passed, but as of early 2026 the fee is not being charged at every post — official guidance to embassies was still being finalised. Expect it to roll out, and budget for it, but always confirm the current amount before you pay.

What it means for Pakistani applicants

The key point: this is a cost change, not a rule change. It does not make you more or less likely to get a visa, and it does not alter the requirements. You still apply with a DS-160, attend an interview, and prove you’re a genuine visitor with strong ties to Pakistan. What changes is simply that you should budget more for the total cost of a US trip.

Tips

  • Budget for the higher total cost
  • Confirm current fees before paying
  • Focus on a strong, genuine application
  • Apply early — interview waits are long

Frequently asked questions

Is the fee refundable? The law contains provisions that may allow reimbursement in certain cases, but the mechanism isn’t yet clear — treat it as a cost for now. Does it replace the visa fee? No, it’s in addition to the existing $185 fee. Will it rise further? It can be adjusted for inflation over time.

Planning your US trip budget

With the integrity fee added, it’s worth mapping out the full cost of a US trip before you start. Beyond the visa (around $435 in fees), you’ll have flights, accommodation, travel expenses and any agent or service charges. Knowing the real total upfront helps you prepare properly and avoids nasty surprises midway through the process. If you’re applying as a family, multiply the visa cost per person — it adds up quickly.

The bigger picture

This fee is part of a wider trend of rising visa costs worldwide, from the UK’s fee increases to Schengen’s higher charges. The takeaway for travellers isn’t to panic, but to plan: apply early, budget for the full amount, and above all submit a strong application so you don’t risk paying twice after a refusal. A well-prepared file is the best value for money you can get.
